Call for participants

Welcome to this introduction text about trash. We have the best trash! It’s everywhere! It lasts forever! Believe me! They tried to get rid of nuclear waste for years now. Couldn’t do it. Total losers! Let’s make trash great again! From this day forward it’s going to be only: trash first!

Okay folks, as funny as it sounds this is really not the world we want to live in. We’ve all heard about trash islands bigger than Germany, we’ve seen videos of animals choking from trash covering whole beaches, and let’s admit we’ve all used a coffee to go cup before. But also movements like foodsharing, people following a zero waste lifestyle, and upcycling projects are on the rise. So which role do WE want to play in this?

What have we planned?

Together with 27 young people from Egypt and Germany you will have the opportunity to not only talk about waste but explore ways to become active. During the exchange you will get to share ideas and search for solutions from a global perspective.

The program includes DIY workshops on upcycling as well as inspiring talks with speakers looking at the topic from different angles. You will go on excursions to places you have probably never even thought of but also time to check out famous sights in both countries. There’s also going to be room for panel discussions, skill sharing within the group and networking with other activists.

We want to bring open-minded people together to get to know each other and stimulate an exchange of thoughts. Since everyone will be a foreigner and local at some point we will have the opportunity to learn from each other and share our experience fostering a mutual understanding. And, of course, you will have some free time to explore your surroundings and have fun together!

The exchange will take place coming summer in Berlin (07.-20. August 2017) and Cairo (12.-26.09.2017). We will stay in a beautifully situated guest house, cook on our own and organize our communal life together. After the exchange, you have the possibility to prolong your stay for one more week and travel through the country on your own expense.

Application

To apply you have to be between 18 and 26 years old and living either in Germany or Egypt. It is not important that you already know a lot about the topic but that you are motivated to learn and attend during the whole program. The exchange fee for German participants is 450€ and includes flights, accomodation, food, and the program.

The project is coordinated by BUNDjugend Berlin (Young Friends of the Earth Berlin), AYCM (Arab Youth Climate Movement Egypt) and icealex. It is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office as part of the German-Egyptian Transformation Partnership. For more information check out our website, blog or facebook page.

We already have a lot of participants but we are still looking for more from Berlin. So application is still open. 🙂 German participants can apply here.

We are looking forward to your application!
